Year 1’s topic is Paws, Claws and Whiskers and to introduce it we had very exciting visitors on Tuesday! Felicity Wood came in with her Abyssinian Guinea pigs: Mummy Pig, Snowball, Ginger and Ginny Pig. We learnt about what they eat, where they come from and how to look after them. Guinea pigs are herbivores and their favourite food is grass! Did you know they only need water in the winter as they get enough water from grass and other foods such as spinach and cucumber! (They must be used to hot climates!)
Guinea pigs come from Bolivia in South America (not Guinea) and they are part of the rodent family rather than the pig family! Their closest relatives are the capybara who some of us have seen at the Wildlife Park! We were very lucky to be able to hold or stroke the guinea pigs and watched them jump on their house! We were lucky they didn’t need the toilet but we did learn that they eat their own poo!
